On November 14, 2023, the Sustainability Day took place at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences under the inspiring theme "FutureEducation - Ready for the Challenges of Our Time". The research centers were also represented at the Sustainability Day.
The event began at 9:00 a.m. with registration for the various workshops, which offered participants the opportunity to take an in-depth look at issues relating to education for sustainable development (Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE)). The official welcome at 9:30 a.m. was given by high-ranking representatives, including Prof. Dr. Nicole Saenger, Vice President for Research and Sustainable Development, Prof. Dr. Michael Vilain, Vice President for Research and International Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Peter Pelz, Vice President for Digitalization, Sustainability & Infrastructure. Martin Seebohn from the Hessian State Center for Political Education and Jürgen Kerwer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation Forum for Responsibility, were also part of the opening.
The keynote speech at 10:00 a.m., presented by Leonie Bellina from the University of Tübingen, was a highlight of the day. In her speech, she shed light on how universities can transform teaching, research and transfer in the face of complex sustainability issues. The challenges of the present and future were discussed intensively, and Bellina encouraged students and lecturers to actively engage with education for sustainable development.
The afternoon offered a wide range of workshops on various topics, including the circular economy, methodology, climate and university structures. A panel discussion with high-profile participants such as Dr. Silke Kleihauer, Head of the Innovation and Transformation Platform for Sustainable Development, concluded the day. The discussion revolved around future education and the challenges it faces. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Bernd Steffensen from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
The evening ended with a science slam on the topic of sustainability organized by the AStA. Overall, the Sustainability Day at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences was a success and helped to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities of a sustainable future.
